Although retrievers are associated with waterfowl hunting, retrievers have been popular in pheasant hunting for years. Several breeds of these flushing dogs are trained to hunt within a comfortable range for the hunter. They then memorize this range of land and abide by those boundaries while hunting.
Over time, these dogs can start to expand their territory and figure out where the birds are. On the other hand, pointing breeds stop and aim their muzzles toward game, letting the hunter know where to point and shoot. Pointing breeds come in varieties of coats, from short-haired, to wire-haired, to silky-coated Setters.
